Gaming addiction: signs and consequences
Gambling addiction, ludomania (from "ludus" - game), gambling (from "to gamble" - to play for money) is a pathological condition, a compulsive dependence on various forms of gambling. This disorder belongs to the group of mental disorders and holds a special place among addictions precisely because of its consequences.
It predominantly affects young, often successful, and frequently talented individuals who rapidly lose their abilities and goals, causing harm to themselves and their families, and often committing crimes due to their addiction.
A person constantly thinks about gambling, spending more and more time on it. They stop engaging in their usual activities, neglecting studies and work. They are no longer able to stop playing, even after a series of losses, let alone after a win. When not playing, they experience constant psychological discomfort, irritability, and anxiety, along with an irresistible urge to start playing again. This state resembles withdrawal symptoms in drug addicts and can be accompanied by headaches, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, fatigue, and attention deficits. During gambling, conversely, a person experiences euphoria and a surge of energy, similar to the effects of certain psychotropic substances. It becomes increasingly difficult for them to quit gambling; they simply lose self-control.
Gambling addiction destroys a person's life almost as effectively as alcoholism or drug addiction. They gradually distance themselves from friends, lose their families and jobs. Meanwhile, financial debts accumulate, the person stops eating properly, and begins to abuse alcohol. Feelings of anxiety and remorse grow, leading to suicidal thoughts. Gradually, they become ready to do anything, even commit a crime, to obtain money for gambling.
Gambling addiction is not a habit or a harmless pastime. Gambling addiction is a pathological dependence with an irresistible urge to gamble. By starting to gamble, there is a risk of losing one's life. It is usually impossible to overcome this affliction independently. The help of specialists is required: a psychiatrist-narcologist, a psychotherapist, a psychologist.
