Lukashenko: BelNPP construction is complete, safety issues remain a priority

The construction of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP) has been completed, and the safety of its operation remains a priority, as before. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko emphasized this while receiving a report on the completion of the BelNPP construction and the increased availability of electricity for heating residential buildings, a BELTA correspondent reports.

"The topic of our conversation today, as you know, is the nuclear power plant. In principle, we have finished the construction and commissioning work. The plant is operating at full capacity, and scheduled preventive and other measures are being carried out as required by regulations. The safety of our plant is the number one issue. There is nothing more to repeat or say about it," said the Belarusian leader.

Alexander Lukashenko stressed that even minor nuances need to be perfected, and the Belarusian side has always set strict requirements in this regard. "Rosatom must understand this perfectly. We are a Chernobyl-affected republic. Even the slightest leniency in the construction of a nuclear power plant is unacceptable for us. People will never forgive us for that. Therefore, these are our strict requirements regarding all sorts of nuances," the head of state noted.

"As far as I am informed, the main units, including this 'nuclear island,' are in order. It is functioning and operating. As for the details, they need to be polished and brought into compliance," the President instructed.

He asked the participants of the event to report on the overall readiness of the BelNPP, and especially its second unit.

As BELTA reported earlier, in October, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Belarus issued a license for the operation of the second power unit of the BelNPP. This concluded the years-long work of all stakeholders in creating a modern nuclear and radiation safety infrastructure in Belarus.
