Lukashenko: We will raise engineering and blue-collar professions to the highest level

Engineering and blue-collar professions in Belarus will be elevated to the highest level. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko stated this on September 2, in response to questions during the event "Open Microphone with the President" with university students from the Vitebsk region, as reported by a BELTA correspondent.

The event participants asked the head of state what, in his opinion, needs to be done to increase youth interest in engineering and make it as prestigious as IT professions.

Alexander Lukashenko replied that a comprehensive set of measures is needed, including, among other things, decent wages and an increase in the authority of engineers in society. For example, many can now call themselves "IT specialists" to some extent, because all young people know how to use gadgets and computers.

"Everyone is an IT specialist, but there are few engineers, a shortage. Hence the prestige," Alexander Lukashenko noted.

"For a family, this is the most important profession – an engineer," the President added, explaining that people with the relevant knowledge and skills can perform many household tasks independently.

"We have deviated somewhat in this regard, we have an imbalance. We will elevate engineering and blue-collar professions to the highest level. Because the state needs this, it is a strategy," the President emphasized. "If we don't deal with this now, then tomorrow there will be no time for gadgets. Everything today comes from farmers and engineers in agriculture and industry."
