Sosnowsky's hogweed is one of the most aggressive invasive plant species in the Republic of Belarus, causing significant economic damage to the country and negatively impacting both ecological systems and human health.

The problem of Sosnowsky's hogweed is a result of lands not being involved in economic turnover and not being cultivated, on which the plant spreads at a high speed. Due to its invasiveness (the ability to displace other plants and grow by 15% annually without cultivation), and the inability of land users to properly and timely combat it, people often suffer serious injuries and burns, while the hogweed continues to conquer new territories.

The most effective methods for controlling Sosnowsky's hogweed are: chemical, using special chemical substances – herbicides that cause plant death; and combined, based on the use of various methods.

What should not be done when destroying areas where Sosnowsky's hogweed grows?

Mown plants should not be left lying on the ground. The generative shoot of hogweed has a large supply of nutrients in its stem – sufficient for the seeds to mature in the main umbrella of the fallen plant.

Hogweed should not be mown at the time of seed dispersal. Otherwise, this will lead to greater spread of the hogweed.

When working with hogweed, one should not be undressed or have unprotected areas of the body. Hogweed sap not washed off the body within 24 hours, when exposed to sunlight (ultraviolet radiation), will lead to the formation of dermatitis resembling burns.

Control of Sosnowsky's hogweed is carried out based on: republican plans of measures for restoring order on the land; district plans of measures for regulating the spread and numbers of invasive plant species.

Based on the approved district plans for regulating the spread and numbers of Sosnowsky's hogweed, authorized officials of the territorial bodies of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, before carrying out the specified measures, send written requirements to land users, containing a list of locations and areas where the specified plant grows, as well as methods for controlling Sosnowsky's hogweed, including the technology and timing of their implementation.

In case of establishing facts of non-fulfillment, improper or untimely fulfillment of a written requirement (order), land users shall be brought to administrative responsibility under Article 24.1 of the Code of the Republic of Belarus on Administrative Offenses.
