✅Strict restrictions on the catch of the wels catfish are in place in Belarus, aimed at preserving its population.

✅In the Vitebsk region, catfish fishing is prohibited from May 31 to July 1. The dates are linked to the spawning period of this species, when catfish leave their usual habitats for reproduction, becoming easy prey. Any catfish accidentally caught during the prohibited period must be immediately released back into the water body in any condition.

‼ Violation of the prohibition entails administrative responsibility under Part 1 of Article 16.25 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Belarus, with a fine of 10 to 30 base units, and confiscation of fishing gear is also possible. The illegal catch of one catfish during the prohibition will cost the offender 12 base units. And in case the damage from illegal fishing exceeds 100 base units, a criminal case may be initiated.

Compliance with these measures is not only a way to avoid fines but also a contribution to the preservation of the biodiversity of Belarusian rivers and lakes for future generations.
