Recommendations for the public when encountering a snake
Saw a snake?
During the peak of the mushroom season, Belarusians have been noticing snakes in the forests more often. However, biologists assure that the number of vipers has not increased; people are simply more actively visiting their habitats.
The common viper can be distinguished by its gray, brown, or almost black coloration with a zigzag pattern on its back, although the pattern may be less noticeable on dark individuals.
When encountering a snake, the most important thing is not to panic: do not touch it, do not try to drive it away with a stick, and do not make sudden movements. If a viper raises its head and hisses, it is a danger signal; in such a case, you should freeze and allow it to crawl away.
"Any sudden movement is perceived by the snake as a threat. Just let it go."
It is important to remember that in case of a viper bite, you must seek medical attention immediately.
Specialists urge caution in the forest and advise against provoking snakes, so that encounters with them pass without consequences.
