Full digitalization of the accounting of water bodies and water protection zones

On July 2, Belarus transitioned to full digitalization of water bodies and water protection areas accounting. To this end, since 2025, RUP "Central Research Institute for Integrated Water Resources Management" has been working on populating the information-analytical system for monitoring and analyzing the activities of IAS "Water Protection Zones," which will become the country's single source of information on surface water bodies, including their classification, as well as the boundaries of water protection zones and coastal strips of water bodies.

"The prospects for the development of internal policy in the field of water protection and use in the context of climate change include the transition to full digitalization of water bodies and water protection areas accounting, as well as the implementation of accumulated scientific experience in modeling rivers, their hydrological regimes, and compiling flood risk maps."

Belarus is fully provided with high-quality drinking water. Total water resources are estimated at 70.8 billion cubic meters, including 2.3 billion cubic meters of groundwater and 68.5 billion cubic meters of surface water.

Analysis of water use dynamics indicates its stability. According to the European Environment Agency, Belarus has become the only "Eastern Partnership" country that has managed to achieve economic growth while reducing water resource consumption.
