The elk is the largest representative of the deer family in Belarus
Annually, the process of antler shedding in adult males occurs from November to January, while in young individuals, this "ritual" takes place from March to April. This is a precisely calibrated evolutionary mechanism: antlers are primarily needed for mating battles, protection from predators, and demonstrating dominance. However, when the active season ends, massive antlers (which can weigh up to 30 kg and have a span of over 1.5 meters) become a burden. Nature "solves" this problem elegantly: the antlers shed on their own, without causing harm to the animal.
Antlers as a "Forest Pharmacy"
It is important to understand that shed antlers are a valuable natural resource. They consist of dense bone tissue, rich in calcium and phosphorus, and therefore become a life-saving aid for rodents (hares, squirrels, mouse-like rodents), as well as for ungulates, which gnaw on them in search of minerals. This is particularly relevant in winter and early spring when natural sources of trace elements in the forest are limited.
Finding antlers is like receiving a gift from nature itself. For forest-dwelling animals, it is a real treasure! Thus, for humans, antlers are a memorable souvenir, and for a hare, they are vitamin support during difficult times.
Ethical Collection
According to the current legislation of the Republic of Belarus, the collection of shed antlers is not prohibited. However, forestry and nature conservation specialists are increasingly calling for a conscious approach:
– When we take antlers from the forest, we bring a piece of wildlife home. But at the same time, we deprive animals of access to an important source of minerals. It is better to photograph, admire, and leave the find within the ecosystem. Let it fulfill its natural mission.
