A new species of fish from the Western Dvina was named after a scientist from PSU named after P. M. Masherov

Dorofeyev's sculpin (Cottus dorofeevi) is among the 66 fish species found in Belarus today. It was discovered in the river system of the Western Dvina and is named in honor of the zoologist who organized the collection of type specimens, Associate Professor of the Department of Fundamental and Applied Biology at Vitebsk State University named after P. M. Masherov, Sergey Dorofeyev.

Interestingly, there are 72 known species in the genus Cottus. Over the past 18 years, 9 new species have been described from Western and Central Europe, and only 2 from the East. Now, Dorofeyev's sculpin has joined this list.
