New bird species registered in Belarus

The White-throated Thrush was first discovered in the country by a resident of Vitebsk on October 21. Its representatives nest in the mountains of Europe. The White-throated Thrush can be easily confused with the common Blackbird, especially females and young individuals. The distinguishing feature of males is a bright white spot on the chest.

The Short-toed Treecreeper was photographed on January 12 in the park of the town of Vysoke, Brest region. The photographer noted the unusually long beak of the bird. This species was last recorded in Belarus in 1918, and later there were only voice recordings. Now scientists have the first photograph.

The Belarusian Ornithological Commission has confirmed the registration of these species in the republic, thus expanding the list to 344 birds.

In 2025, a number of vagrant and rare birds for the country were also registered. For example, the Barn Owl and the Northern Hawk Owl were included in the list.
