On the collection (procurement) of secondary material resources

Collection of secondary material resources (hereinafter referred to as SMR) is an important process that includes the collection, sorting, preparation, and processing of waste for the purpose of reusing materials. This process offers numerous benefits, both for the environment and the economy.

In the Vitebsk region, over 472 thousand tons of solid municipal waste (hereinafter referred to as SMW) were generated in 2025.

To carry out waste collection in the Vitebsk region, 93,786 containers are used, including 49,451 units for mixed SMW collection and 44,335 units for SMR collection, of which 1,141 units are for waste paper, 2,207 units for cullet, 2,111 units for plastic waste, and 38,876 units for mixed collection of all types of SMR.

In the Vitebsk region, 202 collection points operate for the preparation of SMR.

A total of 114.5 thousand tons of SMR were collected in the Vitebsk region in 2025 (109.9 thousand tons in 2024), including: waste paper and cardboard – 51.2 thousand tons, glass waste – 30.1 thousand tons, polymer waste – 17.8 thousand tons, waste household appliances – 2.3 thousand tons, worn-out tires – 9.4 thousand tons, used oils – 3.7 thousand tons.

Separately collected waste is sent to processing enterprises, including those located in the Vitebsk region.

The Vitebsk region has enterprises for the utilization of waste paper and cardboard (e.g., the "Krasnaya Zvezda" Paper Mill branch of JSC "Svetlogorsk Pulp and Cardboard Mill", Chashniki), polymer waste (UP "Biomechplant of Household Secondary Resources", State Enterprise "Spetsavtobaza of Vitebsk", ODO "Vetplastik"), waste electrical and electronic equipment (LLC "Zapadnaya Pererabatyvayushchaya Kompaniya" (Polotsk)), and others.
