How did Belarus residents sort waste in 2025?

By the end of last year, Belarus reached an important milestone in solid waste management: the utilization rate approached 50%. According to preliminary data, 48.9% of the total volume of solid municipal waste (SMW) generated in 2025 was sent for recycling. In total, 4 million 680 thousand tons of SMW were generated last year.

Almost a million tons of waste for recycling!

Over the past year, our country collected 945.2 thousand tons of basic types of secondary raw materials (SRM): waste paper and cardboard, glass, plastics, worn-out tires, used oils, and electrical and electronic equipment. Thus, over the year, Belarus residents collected 105 thousand tons more recyclables than in 2024. On average, each resident of the country submitted about 104 kilograms of secondary resources for recycling.

Which region of Belarus sorts better?

The capital provided the maximum total volume of recyclables. Minsk residents collected 225.73 thousand tons of SRM – almost a quarter of the national volume. However, if we assess public engagement, considering the number of people living in Minsk and the regions, the best result in terms of collection volume per capita is achieved by the residents of the Mogilev region.

Eco-habit as a norm

Success in sorting is impossible without an adequate material and technical base. Today, more than 85% of the Belarusian population has conditions for separate waste collection. 10 large waste processing plants and 73 sorting lines operate in this sector. The container fleet is also an important indicator: out of 861.7 thousand units, almost half – 403.7 thousand – are specifically designed for separate collection of secondary raw materials.

The final figures for 2025 are essentially a statistical reflection of the daily choices of millions of people. The practice of separate waste collection in Belarus is ceasing to be a niche initiative and is becoming a social norm. The results of 2025 show that systematic work to create conditions and improve the environmental literacy of citizens is yielding results. Further progress will directly depend on how firmly this habit is established in the homes of every resident of the country.
