Terms and rules of the spawning ban

The spawning ban will be in effect depending on the region:

from March 20 to May 18 in the Brest and Gomel regions;

from April 1 to May 30 in the Grodno, Minsk, and Mogilev regions;

from April 10 to June 8 in the Vitebsk region.

Spawning is a crucial stage in the fish life cycle, determining their future reproduction. Most fish species inhabiting Belarusian waters spawn in spring. During this period, it is especially important to ensure safe conditions for fish reproduction to preserve and increase their population. For this purpose, fishing restrictions are introduced annually in the country, which every citizen must comply with.

During this period, recreational fishing is permitted only with one rod with one hook or one spinning rod equipped with one artificial lure having no more than two single, double, or treble hooks, during daylight hours from the shore (without entering the water), as well as from ice or artificial structures for which no restrictions or prohibitions on economic activities are established.

Fishermen are allowed to use a landing net to lift fish caught by rod or spinning rod out of the water.

Recreational fishing using other fishing gear, as well as commercial fishing, is strictly prohibited during this period. Violation of these rules entails administrative liability under Article 16.25 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Belarus. The fine for citizens can range from 10 to 30 basic units. In addition, for illegal fishing during the ban period, compensation for environmental damage is provided at triple the rate for each individual removed. In case of damage amounting to 100 or more basic units, criminal liability is incurred.

During the spawning period, the use of vessels on water bodies and watercourses is also prohibited. Exceptions are made when vessels are used for economic, transport, sports, or tourist purposes, but only with a special permit issued by the district or city executive committee. Violation of this rule entails a fine of up to 10 basic units for individuals and up to 50 basic units for legal entities.
