Canadian goldenrod is officially recognized as a dangerous invasive species in the Republic of Belarus

In the Republic of Belarus, Canadian goldenrod is officially recognized as a dangerous invasive (alien) plant species, the cultivation and propagation of which is legally prohibited (Article 27 of the Law of the Republic of Belarus "On the Plant World"). Experts rank it alongside Sosnowski's hogweed in terms of ecological aggressiveness, and it even surpasses it in the speed of territory encroachment.

Why it is dangerous

Displaces native flora: Goldenrod roots release inhibitors (toxic substances) that completely suppress the growth of other plants.

Destroys ecosystems: In meadows occupied by it, fodder grasses disappear, followed by the disappearance of meadow insects, birds, and small mammals.

Reproduces easily: One bush produces up to 100,000 seeds with 100% germination, which are carried by the wind over vast distances.

Harmful to health: The plant's pollen is a strong allergen and can trigger outbreaks of hay fever and asthma.

Fines for plot owners

In Belarus, the responsibility for destroying the plant is entirely placed on land users (gardeners, owners of private houses, enterprises).

As of June 19, 2026, strict amendments to the Code of Administrative Offences of the Republic of Belarus came into force (a special article 16.46 was introduced).
