Canadian goldenrod, an elegant plant or an extremely dangerous weed?

Many still consider this plant an ornament, planting it on household plots, dachas, and cemeteries. And they make an irreparable mistake. Because goldenrod has one very unpleasant feature – after some time it will displace all other plantings from its growing area, and along with them – most insects, birds, and mammals.

Canadian goldenrod is on par with Sosnowski's hogweed and the Colorado potato beetle in terms of environmental hazard.

Please note that from June 19, 2026, the Code of Administrative Offenses will be supplemented with a new Article 16.46 "Failure to carry out measures to regulate the spread and numbers of certain plant species."

This means that land users face a fine of up to 10 basic units (up to 450 rubles) if they do not combat unwanted plants. The most dangerous of these include not only the well-known Sosnowski's hogweed, but also Canadian goldenrod, which is not inferior to hogweed in environmental threat, and even surpasses it in aggressiveness.

The plant-occupier can be combated by chemical and mechanical methods. It is recommended to mow the dangerous weed as it regrows to 15-20 centimeters. Where goldenrod occupies significant areas, plowing with undersowing of perennial grasses will be an effective solution. Herbicide treatment also helps.

To prevent the damage caused by goldenrod, measures are being taken in the Rossony district to regulate the spread and numbers of invasive plants.
