Palliative and hospice care

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day is celebrated on the second Saturday of October. In 2023, this day falls on October 7. The initiative for its observance comes from the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance.

Palliative care is viewed as a medical and social field. Palliative care as a social phenomenon is a comprehensive type of care for people with chronic incurable diseases who require medical, social, psychological, and spiritual support. Such support is also needed by their immediate circle. Palliative medical care begins from the moment a chronic incurable disease is diagnosed. This is the so-called palliative approach, which is applied to any person, regardless of their illness (oncological, endocrinological, vascular), which will progress and whose outcome is inevitable.

A hospice is an organization or form of care for people that involves symptom control.

Palliative medical care in Belarus is planned and can be provided in inpatient or outpatient settings, as well as at home. The structure includes hospices, specialized centers, palliative medical care departments in hospitals, and offices in polyclinics, hospitals and nursing care departments, stationary social institutions, and day centers.

Home care is provided by visiting care services and palliative medical care offices with a visiting team function. For short-term care, routine pain relief at home is performed by outpatient polyclinic organizations during their working hours, and at other times by the emergency medical service.
