STI Prevention

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) include diseases such as: trichomoniasis, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, anogenital warts, genital herpes, as well as HIV infection and hepatitis B, which can also be transmitted sexually.

Transmission occurs through any sexual contact (vaginal, oral, anal).

STI symptoms vary among individuals, depending on the cause, and many people may have no symptoms at all.

People with STIs may feel unwell and notice some of the following signs and symptoms:

  • Unusual discharge from the genitals
  • Rash in the genital area
  • Painful or frequent urination
  • Itching and redness in the genital area
  • Blisters or sores in or around the mouth
  • Abnormal vaginal odor
  • Anal itching, pain, or bleeding
  • Abdominal pain

There are several main causes of STIs:

  • Bacteria - gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia
  • Viruses - HIV/AIDS, herpes simplex virus, human papillomavirus, hepatitis B virus
  • Protozoa - trichomoniasis
  • Insects - pubic lice or scabies mite

Anyone who is sexually active should discuss their STI risk factors with a healthcare professional and get tested. If you are sexually active, it is important to remember that you may have an STI and not know it, because many STIs do not cause symptoms. You should get tested and have regular check-ups with a specialist who can help assess your risk, answer your questions, and diagnose and treat STIs if necessary.

Prompt treatment is important to prevent the spread of infection to others and to minimize long-term complications of STIs. Recent sexual partners should also be treated to prevent reinfection and further transmission.

Whatever the infection, and regardless of how quickly symptoms disappear after treatment begins, the infected person and their partner(s) must take all prescribed medications to ensure complete treatment of the STI. Additionally, they should follow the healthcare provider's recommendations for safe sexual behavior.

All medications must be prescribed by a venereologist. Self-treatment is dangerous not only due to the progression of the disease but can also lead to a fatal outcome.

The main methods of STD prevention are:

  • Abstinence from casual sex. Even condoms do not guarantee protection.
  • At the slightest symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. The infection can be easily eliminated in the early stages.
  • Observe basic hygiene rules before and after sexual contact.
  • Use of preventive douches, solutions, and medications.

Take care of yourself and your loved ones!
