December 1, 2024 - World AIDS Day

Annually on December 1, preventive measures are carried out worldwide as part of the Global Campaign against HIV infection, timed to coincide with World AIDS Day.

       World AIDS Day is dedicated to a specific theme each year. In 2024, this theme will be "The Right to Health – The Right Path".

What is HIV?

HIV infection is a chronic infectious disease characterized by a slow course, affecting the immune and nervous systems, and leading to the development of opportunistic (co-infections) in the absence of treatment.

Source of Infection

The sole source of infection is a person who is not receiving treatment and continues to spread HIV.

Modes of HIV Transmission

There are three main modes of transmission:

  • Sexual contact – through oral, vaginal, anal intercourse
  • Parenteral route (through blood) – through intravenous drug use, use of unsterilized needles and syringes, through non-disinfected instruments for hygiene procedures.
  • Vertical transmission – the virus is transmitted from an infected mother to her child during pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding in the absence of maternal treatment.

A high concentration of the virus capable of infecting a healthy organism is found in blood, semen, and vaginal secretions.

HIV is NOT transmitted:

  • through friendly kisses;
  • through handshakes;
  • through coughing, sneezing;
  • through dishes, clothing, bedding;
  • when visiting swimming pools, saunas, toilets;
  • through insect bites.

Disease Treatment

Currently, treatment is available to all people living with HIV, free of charge. Effective treatment stops the progression of the disease in the individual and also stops the transmission of HIV to others.

HIV Prevention: always use only personal hygiene items, use condoms, avoid casual sexual encounters, do not use narcotic drugs, be moral and faithful to your chosen partner.

      In the urban settlement of Rossony, HIV testing can be done anonymously and free of charge at the district polyclinic of the Healthcare Institution "Rossony Central District Hospital" in the procedure room (Monday-Friday). HIV testing can also be done using express tests, which can be purchased at pharmacies in the urban settlement of Rossony or pharmacies throughout our Republic.
