What is necessary to maintain healthy hearing?

March 3, 2025 - International Ear and Hearing Health Day.

Human hearing organs are quite fragile and vulnerable parts of the body. Ears can easily get frostbitten, catch a cold, and it's also quite easy to contract some kind of infection. Many people believe that ear problems can only occur in cold weather, but there are many possible problems that ears can be exposed to at any time of the year. For example, the main pastime in the summer for both adults and children is visiting beaches and bodies of water. As a rule, in hot weather, it is impossible to do without swimming and diving, and this does not always end well for the hearing organs. Thus, it becomes much easier to get a foreign object in the ear, catch a cold, injure it, or get an infection. In the winter period, ears must be protected from frostbite, injuries, and infections. Too loud music and regular use of headphones also cause great harm to hearing.

Prevention rules to follow to maintain healthy hearing

— Timely treatment of ear diseases. Forget about treating ENT diseases solely with folk remedies. If you have had a sore throat for a long time or are tired of a runny nose, it is best to see a doctor. It is worth remembering that ears, throat, and nose are closely interconnected, and if an infection is present in one place, it can easily spread to the hearing organs.

— Hygiene. When cleaning the ear canal and auricles, do not use sharp objects. Also, use cotton swabs with caution, as this can push dirt further into the ear canal. A sharp object can injure the ear not only externally but also internally.

Moderate music volume. Listening to music too loudly for a long time can provoke hearing loss. Over time, hearing will begin to deteriorate, and in the most severe cases, it can be completely lost.

Preventive examinations.

It is mandatory to undergo a medical examination. Regular check-ups of hearing organ health will undoubtedly be beneficial. Visit an otolaryngologist not only when unpleasant symptoms appear but also simply to check your health.

Loud noises, windy weather, outbreaks of infectious diseases – these and many other factors can cause hearing loss. Be careful and follow preventive measures!

What to do if your hearing deteriorates?

If hearing problems occur suddenly and without any apparent reason, it is best to see a doctor immediately. There are many causes of hearing loss, but each has its own treatment option. In some cases, it is only necessary to clear the ear canal of earwax buildup, while in others, surgical intervention may be required, or the doctor may suggest using hearing aids, the functionality of which allows sound to be transmitted just as a real human ear does.

Take care of yourself and your loved ones!
