May 2, 2025 - International "Asthma Day"

International Asthma Day, proclaimed by the World Health Organization (WHO), is held annually at the initiative of the "Global Initiative for Asthma" (GINA) project, with the aim of drawing global public attention to the problem of asthma. The first International Asthma Day was celebrated in 1998 in 35 countries as part of the First World Asthma Meeting in Barcelona, Spain.

Bronchial asthma is a chronic, non-infectious inflammatory disease of the airways. An asthma attack often develops after prodromal symptoms and is characterized by a short, sharp inhalation and a noisy, prolonged exhalation. It is usually accompanied by a cough with viscous sputum and loud wheezing.

Prevention of bronchial asthma attacks

Prevention of bronchial asthma can be primary and secondary.

Primary prevention of bronchial asthma is aimed at preventing the onset of the disease.

Secondary prevention involves a set of measures designed to alleviate the patient's well-being, prevent acute attacks of suffocation, and the occurrence of complications. Primary prevention of bronchial asthma must be carried out by individuals who are at increased risk of developing the disease (primarily children).

The risk group includes individuals with:

  • a genetic predisposition to allergies;
  • secondary onset of croup;
  • a history of allergies;
  • symptoms of atopic dermatitis;
  • working conditions that contribute to the development of the disease (working in dusty environments, with chemicals, including household chemicals, perfumes);
  • broncho-obstructive syndrome, which manifests during acute respiratory viral infections;
  • the harmful habit of smoking.

Primary prevention of bronchial asthma includes the following measures:

  • hardening and performing a set of exercises for physical health and strengthening immunity;
  • moderate use of aerosol products at home;
  • correct behavior of pregnant women for the robust health of their future baby:
  • rational nutrition with minimal consumption of allergenic foods, elimination of harmful occupational conditions, smoking cessation, prevention of ARVI and other diseases, use of medications strictly as prescribed by the attending physician, followed by breastfeeding;
  • refusal of active and passive smoking;
  • frequent walks in the fresh air;
  • residence in an area with a favorable environmental situation;
  • minimal contact with household chemicals.

Secondary prevention of bronchial asthma

Secondary prevention of bronchial asthma attacks is based on:

  • elimination of chronic sinusitis, infectious lesions of the respiratory system, and other pathologies;
  • avoidance of contact with allergens;
  • frequent wet cleaning of the living space;
  • regular ventilation of all rooms and drying of bedding, pillows, and blankets in frost or heat in the open air;
  • elimination of items prone to dust accumulation (carpets, old furniture, rugs, stuffed toys);
  • avoidance of contact with pets or houseplants if they provoke choking fits;
  • refusal to keep aquarium fish, as their dry food often provokes allergic reactions;
  • elimination of mold sources at home, as well as excessive humidity;
  • choice of pillows with synthetic filling materials;
  • exclusion of foods recognized as allergens from the diet;
  • implementation of a set of measures to prevent colds and ARVI;
  • thorough adherence to personal hygiene;
  • careful use of medications;
  • performance of breathing exercises;
  • additional strengthening of immune defense through massage, acupuncture;
  • refusal of bad habits.

Take care of yourself and your loved ones!
