Prevention of hearing loss and ear diseases

Prevention of Ear Diseases and Hearing Loss

Prevention of ear diseases and hearing loss is very important for maintaining the ability to communicate, live a full life, avoid social isolation, and cognitive impairment.

Preventive measures include:

  • Protection from noise and volume:
    • Limiting time in noisy places, using earplugs or headphones.
    • Reducing music volume, especially with headphones.
    • Using personal protective equipment in the workplace.
    • Avoid sounds above 80–110 dB (concerts, construction, loud music).
    • The "60/60" rule: Do not listen to headphones at more than 60% of maximum volume and for no longer than 60 minutes at a time.
Remember: safe noise exposure is up to 80 dB (loud conversation), dangerous is above 110 dB (rock concert).
  • Hygiene and care:
    • Do not use cotton swabs, matches, or hairpins to clean the ear canal (remove earwax only from the auricle).
    • Protect ears from cold and water (when swimming).
    • Gentle nose blowing (alternately clearing each nostril).
  • Disease prevention:
    • Vaccination of children against measles, rubella, mumps, meningitis.
    • Timely treatment of colds and upper respiratory tract infections.
    • Medication management (avoiding ototoxic drugs).
  • Healthy lifestyle:
    • Quitting smoking and alcohol.
    • Controlling blood sugar and pressure (important for the health of the inner ear blood vessels).
    • Hardening, physical activity.
    • Improve blood circulation, consume foods rich in magnesium (nuts, legumes) and vitamins.
  • Regular check-ups with an ENT doctor (at least once a year).

If you experience pain, congestion, or sudden hearing loss, seek medical attention immediately without self-medicating!

Take care of yourself and your loved ones!
