Two people drowned in the Vitebsk region

Fatal incidents on water have been recorded in the city of Postavy and the Polotsk district.

On May 22, at 6:21 AM, Postavy rescuers received a report about the need to assist in retrieving the body of a drowned woman from a well in the city of Postavy.

The incident occurred on the territory of a private household. Ministry of Emergency Situations workers retrieved the body of the 1972-born owner of the property from a well approximately 7 meters deep.

And this morning at 7:19 AM, rescuers received a report from police officers about a drowned person in the Western Dvina River near the village of Shmatovo, Polotsk district.

Upon arrival at the scene, Ministry of Emergency Situations workers established that the body of the drowned person was located 15 meters from the shore. Ministry of Emergency Situations workers recovered him to the surface.

It is known from the circumstances that the deceased, a male pensioner born in 1964, went fishing in March. His car was found earlier near the river, and the man himself was not found.

Investigative bodies are conducting verification procedures on both drowning incidents.

Since the beginning of the year, 30 people have drowned in the Vitebsk region, which is 20 more cases than in the same period last year. Rescuers urge citizens to be mindful and adhere to safety rules when fishing and when relaxing near water.
