Rossonsky District is located in the northwest of the Vitebsk region. It was formed on July 17, 1924. Its area is 1.9 thousand square kilometers. 60 percent of the territory is covered by forests, 20 percent by agricultural land. The soils are sod-podzolic (80.3%), sod-bog (29.1%). The district has 192 large and small lakes (27 of which are commercially fished). The largest of them are Neshchardo, Usvyachye, Volobo, Beloye, Sinsha, Shevino. The largest river is Drissa with its tributaries Svolno, Nisha, Neshcharda. Mineral resources include peat, sand, sand and gravel material, clay, and loams. The climate is temperate. The average temperature in January is -7.8 degrees Celsius, in July +17.7 degrees Celsius, precipitation is 578 mm per year, and the growing season is 183 days.

According to forest zoning, the territory of the district belongs to the Polotsk complex of forest areas of the West Dvina forest zoning district of the subzone of broad-leaved-spruce (oak-dark coniferous) forests.

The climate of the district is moderately warm and humid, characterized by the following figures:

  • average annual temperature (in degrees Celsius) +6.1, absolute maximum from +36 to –40;
  • annual precipitation 583 millimeters;
  • growing season duration 183 days;
  • last frosts in spring May 6-13;
  • first frosts in autumn September 27-30;
  • average date of river freezing December 5-16, and the start of the flood April 3-5;
  • snow cover appears December 9-12, and melts in the forest by April 5-9, soil freezing depth is 50-55 centimeters;
  • relative air humidity 69%.

Overall, the climate of the district is quite favorable for the successful growth of the following tree species: pine, spruce, birch, aspen, black alder, and grey alder. The territory of the district is located in the northern part of the Polotsk Lowland. The relief of the district bears the relatively fresh imprint of the Valdai (Würm) glacier's activity. The altitude above sea level is 130-150 m, to the north it rises to 160-190 m. The highest points are located west of the village of Rovnoye Pole (169 m) near the village of Nizinki (193 m) and the village of Shnitovka (200 m).
